The Role<\/p>\n
The Geotechnical Technician supports the Geotechnical Engineer in maintaining the safe and stable operation of open pit slopes, waste dumps, and other mine excavations. The role is responsible for collecting and managing geotechnical data, monitoring ground conditions and instrumentation, identifying geotechnical hazards, and assisting with the implementation of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP). The position contributes to preventing slope failures, rockfalls, and other ground instability hazards while supporting safe, compliant, and efficient mining operations.<\/p>\n
Key Responsibilities<\/p>\n
1. Geotechnical Monitoring and Data Collection<\/p>\n
Assist the Geotechnical Engineer in conducting daily inspections of open pits, waste dumps, haul roads, and other mining areas.
\nConduct geological and geotechnical mapping, structural mapping, and geotechnical core logging.
\nCollect rock, soil, and groundwater samples for laboratory testing.
\nInstall, inspect, maintain, and monitor geotechnical instrumentation, including piezometers, prisms, extensometers, slope stability radar systems, and data loggers.
\nCollect, validate, and maintain monitoring data from field observations and instrumentation.
\nMonitor ground movement and groundwater conditions and promptly report abnormal trends or instability.
\n2. Ground Control and Risk Management<\/p>\n
Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
\nIdentify, assess, and communicate geotechnical hazards, including unstable slopes, rockfalls, and ground movement.
\nProvide timely geotechnical information to Mining Operations, Drill and Blast, Planning, and other stakeholders to support safe production.
\nParticipate in hazard identification, risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation.
\nAssist the Geotechnical Engineer in developing practical ground control recommendations.
\n3. Data Analysis and Reporting<\/p>\n
Compile and maintain accurate geotechnical monitoring databases.
\nAnalyse field observations and instrumentation data to identify changes in ground performance.
\nPrepare daily, weekly, monthly, and incident-specific geotechnical reports.
\nMaintain complete and accurate technical records to support engineering decisions and regulatory compliance.
\n4. Safety, Compliance, and Operational Excellence<\/p>\n
Promote and demonstrate Allied Gold’s Safety Vision and Values in all work activities.
\nEnsure all work is carried out in accordance with the Ground Control Management Plan, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), company standards, and applicable Ethiopian mining legislation.
\nConduct routine workplace and geotechnical safety inspections.
\nIdentify hazards, report risks promptly, and assist in implementing appropriate control measures.
\nParticipate in daily production meetings, safety meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency response activities.
\nEnsure accurate and timely submission of operational reports and documentation.
\nContribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance geotechnical monitoring, operational efficiency, and mine safety.
\n5. Teamwork and Operational Support<\/p>\n
Work closely with the Geotechnical Engineer, Mining Operations, Survey, Drill and Blast, and Planning teams to achieve operational objectives.
\nSupport effective communication of geotechnical risks and operational constraints.
\nPromote teamwork, collaboration, and knowledge sharing across multidisciplinary teams.
\nAssist in training and mentoring junior personnel and contractors on geotechnical monitoring procedures and ground awareness.
\nPlan and organize daily work activities to ensure efficient use of time, equipment, and resources.
\nIdentify opportunities to improve monitoring processes, reduce operational costs, and minimize waste while maintaining high technical standards.<\/p>\n
About You
\nQualifications<\/p>\n
Education<\/p>\n
Bachelor’s Degree or MSc in Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related Earth Science discipline.
\nExperience<\/p>\n
1\u20133 years of practical field experience in geotechnical engineering within an open pit mining operation, quarry, or large civil earthworks project.
\nKnowledge<\/p>\n
Basic understanding of rock mechanics, rock mass classification, and slope stability principles.
\nKnowledge of geotechnical monitoring systems and instrumentation.
\nUnderstanding of geological and hydrological factors affecting pit stability.
\nFamiliarity with open pit blasting practices and their influence on slope performance.
\nKnowledge of mining industry standards, ground control practices, and safety requirements.
\nSkills<\/p>\n
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting and data management.
\nAbility to use surveying equipment, geological mapping tools, GPS equipment, and basic geotechnical software.
\nStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
\nAbility to prepare accurate technical reports and maintain detailed records.
\nGood written and verbal communication skills in Amharic and English other language proficiency is an advantage.
\nAbility to work effectively under pressure while meeting deadlines.
