Position Summary
\nThe\u00a0Senior Forest and Landscape Specialist\u00a0is expected to provide strategic and technical leadership in designing and implementing integrated, system-level interventions that transform forest and landscape management in Ethiopia. This role is central to ensuring HARNESS achieves its ambition of\u00a0transforming systems\u2014not just delivering projects. By aligning governance, markets, finance, and livelihoods, the position will help establish a\u00a0scalable model for sustainable forest and landscape management in Ethiopia. The position is a senior role requiring: systems thinking, policy and institutional engagement as well as market and financing integration The successful candidate will ensure interventions move from fragmented activities to\u00a0coherent, scalable systems\u00a0aligned with national policies and global commitments.<\/p>\n
Key Responsibilities
\nLead integrated landscape approaches and systemic transformation strategies.
\nStrengthen governance systems across federal, regional, and local levels.
\nDevelop deforestation-free value chains aligned with international standards.
\nSupport sustainable financing mechanisms including REDD+, carbon finance, and blended finance models.
\nPromote inclusive livelihoods (youth, women, returnees) and climate-resilient enterprises.
\nGuide restoration and climate-smart land use practices.
\nDocument lessons and contribute to global knowledge on integrated landscape approaches.
\nEngage government, private sector, and development partners through multi-stakeholder platforms.
\nSupport monitoring and evaluation of deforestation reduction, system-level change, and livelihood impacts.
\nAbout You
\nRequired Education, Qualifications\/Experiences:<\/p>\n
PhD or MSc Degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Policy, Climate Change, or related field.
\nMinimum of 10\u201312 years of relevant experience in forest and landscape management, REDD+, climate finance, and policy engagement.
\nTechnical Competencies
\nStrong understanding of integrated landscape approaches, forest governance systems, sustainable value chains, and climate finance mechanisms,
\nProven expertise in Forest and landscape management, REDD+ and climate finance, Policy and institutional engagement,
\nKnowledge of GIS and digital technologies for tracking land use and land cover changes,
\nCore Competencies
\nAbility to apply systems thinking in programme design,
\nExcellent leadership, stakeholder engagement, analytical, and communication skills.
\nAbility to work in complex, multi-partners environment
\nExperience in Ethiopia or similar contexts is highly desirable.
\nDesirable Attributes
\nExperience with donor-funded programmes (e.g., NORAD\/NICFI).
\nKnowledge of Ethiopian policy and institutional context.
\nExperience working with private sector and market systems.
